The newest addition to the SBS sports catalogue is the dance team! Coached by Ms. Jeanette Gross, the dancers have performed at many home basketball games, hyping up the crowd and encouraging school spirit all the while.
Here’s some insight from the team regarding Coach Jeanette, how the team is working together, and plans for dance in the future.
According to her dancers, Coach Jeanette used to dance for the Brooklyn Nets. She now owns and directs On the Edge Performance Center in Port Jefferson Station. All of the instructors who work at the studio were also professional dancers. Coach Jeanette came to coach at SBS this year after being reached out to by students who expressed interest in starting a dance team at SBS.
Let’s take a look at how the dance team feels about the sport and working with each other:
“The team works pretty well together because we do practice outside of time with coaches,” explains Maya Venkatesh. “I feel like there’s a general positive energy for dance since it’s a new and exciting addition to SBS. I’ve loved dance because it feels freeing and fun.”
“The other girls are a vibe. We have a bunch of fun together,” says KenYa Romeus.
“We’re a very good group. We’ve even been able to work together to make up our own parts for the dances. Overall dance is really fun,” adds Bella D’Amato.
Jiwon Choi says, “I enjoy dancing with the other girls on the team!”
The team currently choreographs and practices in Hollis.
The final topic of interest concerning the dance team is plans for the future. Going forward, Coach Jeanette plans to start a competitive team. Furthermore, dance will be available for multiple seasons, rather than exclusively during the winter season.
All of that being said, dance is a fun new part of the SBS’ sports lineup. Go support Varsity Basketball and watch some of the dance team’s astounding performances!
